Mission
An artful alternative to mainstream publishing, Homestead Lighthouse Press (HLP) champions the literary arts and literacy, guiding into print memorable books of contemporary poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
Among other endeavors, HLP seeks to develop community writing programs and to foster and promote writing as spiritual practice, gender enlightenment, mentor-apprentice relationships, rites of passage, and women’s rights.
At Homestead Lighthouse Press, writers, activists, and readers will discover both a safe haven and unwavering advocacy.
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit publisher, Homestead Lighthouse Press supports fine literature, as well as literacy and educational literary programming.
Founding
Founded by poet Robert McDowell, Homestead Lighthouse Press honors the work, lives, and legacies of two literary geniuses: Emily Dickinson and Virginia Woolf.
The name Homestead celebrates Dickinson’s Amherst, Massachusetts, home, now the Emily Dickinson Museum; the name Lighthouse honors Woolf’s iconic metaphor: the lighthouse of her childhood summers and the image at the heart of her brilliant novel To the Lighthouse.
