A Trio of Novellas
One of our favorite writers, Bruce Lawder, is following up on his poetry collection Breakwater Rock with 3 For the Road, a trio of “on the road” novellas — “Schlemm,” “The Marriage Ceremony,” and “California” — set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Each of the memorable characters finds himself concerned with moving from place to place, physically, mentally, and spiritually, while wrestling with what it means to be a survivor, if surviving means taking another person’s life, or lying, or compromising one’s own values to find meaning from living and working. The road “(not) taken” in these stories is implicit in the promise of the title, echoing not only novelist Jack Kerouac and poet Robert Frost in suggesting the difficulty of the journey but also recalling, as all American roads do, Walt Whitman. Lawder’s book, to be published August 20, is available by preorder directly from HLP or your favorite bookstore.
Poetry
Coming September 11 is Robert McDowell‘s important new collection The Excellent Assembly: Poems Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. Comprising lyrical narratives and monologues, McDowell’s poems make clear that although no fiction or poetry can speak literally for those who died or survived on that tragic day, art can offer scenes and voices that help us remember the dead, those who lived, those who grieve still, and the men and women whose heroism on 9/11 inspires us to this day, 25 years after one of the most horrific events in modern American history.
